POST OFFICE & PINCODE

A post office is a government operated postal system in India known as India Post. It is under the jurisdiction of Department of Post, Ministry of Communications of the Government of India and most widely distributed postal system in the world. India Post is a public facility and a retailer that provides mail services, such as accepting letters and parcels, providing post office boxes, and selling postage stamps, packaging, and stationery.

India has 29 states and at least 720 districts comprising of approximately 6 lakh villages, and over 8200 cities and towns. Indian postal department has allotted a unique postal code of pin code to each district/village/town/city to ensure quick delivery of postal services. There are at least 19101 PIN covering more than 154,725 post offices in Hindustan, with the exception of the Army Postal Service.

PINCODE OR ZIP

Pincode, PIN or Postal Index Number is the numbering of the post office or post code system used by India Post. The PINcode is 6 digits long. First digit reflects region, second the sub-region, third the sorting district, and last three represent the post office code. India has nine PIN zones. The PIN code was first introduced on Aug 15, 1972 by Shriram Bhikaji who was the then Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Communications. A new system was felt required to simply the process of manual sorting and delivery of mails. A ZIP code is the term used to describe the postal code system in the United States.

POST OFFICE TYPE IN INDIA

Post Offices are classified into 3 types, namely – Head Post Office, Sub-Post Office including E.D. Sub-Office and Branch Postoffice.
