Pincode, PIN or Postal Index Number is the numbering of the post office or post code system used by India Post. The PINcode is 6 digits long. First digit reflects region, second the sub-region, third the sorting district, and last three represent the post office code. India has nine PIN zones. The PIN code was first introduced on Aug 15, 1972 by Shriram Bhikaji who was the then Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Communications. A new system was felt required to simply the process of manual sorting and delivery of mails. A ZIP code is the term used to describe the postal code system in the United States.
